The Omnivore's Hundred

I love lists. I love crossing things off of lists even more. It makes me feel highly accomplished. When I saw this omnivore's hundred on Just Hungry  I knew I had to give it ago!
This will also serve as an eating checklist for me in a celebration of sorts, since I found out for sure that I am absolutely 100% non celiac. I will try ANYTHING!
Here are the rules of this
1) Copy this list into your blog or journal, including these instructions.
2) Bold all the items you’ve eaten.
3) Cross out any items that you would never consider eating.
4) Optional extra: Post a comment here at www.verygoodtaste.co.uk linking to your results.

Recipe Box Swap Thursday!

swap blogpost

I just recently discovered a Neat blog I have to say...., No That is the name of the blog. Anywho, today is recipe box swap, so here is a recipe for my FAVORITE cookie ever! Apparently these are not easy to come by outside of the Metro New York area. If I ever do move from here at least I will be set with these. Bagels are my next problem! If have never had these before you must make them. You will not be disappointed. The cookies are light and tender, just like they should be!

This recipe is from Gale Gand of the food network. One tip I do have is to Absolutely make sure that you sift the cocoa powder for the black frosting! Other wise you get little cocoa lumps when you spread our frosting out. This doesn't taste different, it is just an aesthetic thing . These are so tasty, so tasty that my husband took two for breakfast the other day! They also keep well in an airtight container for at least a week (if of course they last that long) And don't let the icing seem tedious. Its quick and easy.

Black And Whites

8 tablespoons (1 stick) unsalted butter
1 cup granulated sugar
2 eggs
1/2 cup whole, 2 percent fat, or 1 percent fat milk
1/4 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1/8 teaspoon pure lemon extract
1 1/4 cups cake flour
1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
Vanilla and chocolate icing, recipes follows

Vanilla Icing:
2 cups confectioners' sugar
3 tablespoons milk
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Chocolate Icing:
1/2 vanilla icing recipe
2 tablespoons cocoa powder
2 tablespoons milk

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

Line a baking sheet with waxed or parchment paper. In a mixer, cream the butter. Add the granulated sugar and beat until fluffy. Add the eggs, milk, and extracts and mix to combine. In a large bowl, combine the flours, baking powder, and salt and mix well. Add the dry ingredients to the sugar-egg mixture and mix to blend. Using an ice-cream scoop, scoop the dough onto the prepared pans. With a spatula, press and spread each cookie into a circle about 5 inches in diameter and about 3/8-inch thickness. Bake for about 20 minutes, until golden. Let cool on wire racks.

Icing: In a medium bowl, stir the sugar, milk, and vanilla together until it forms a smooth icing. Transfer half of the icing to another bowl and stir in the cocoa powder and milk until smooth.

When cool, turn cookies over, so the flat side faces up. Spread white icing on half of each flat surface, then spread the other half with chocolate icing. Let set at room temperature for 30 minutes.

P.S.

My birthday is in 16 days! My Tiki birthday party will be here soon!

June 4th

I cannot believe that it is June already! Before I know it the summer will be over and I will (again) be starting a new school. In the fall I will be attending Stony Brook University. I just transfered there so that I could major specifically in Asian Studies and Japanese. Im really excited. It also means that when that Happens that Matty will be on tour for a month and half with his band Royal City Riot. And then I will be sad.

Our garden is doing wonderful. I spent about 2 hours weeding yesterday. I also set up strings for the hops to grow up on. When I went outside in the morning yesterday I saw our Magnum hops just starting to snuggle up and around the tomato cage I put up for protection. I knew it was time to set up string trellis. I am SO amazed at how fast they have been growing. I should start mesuring them, they say that they can grow several inches in a day!
Im excited to say that my pole beans have made it so far also! The birds kept picking the seeds from the garden, I thought they were all gonners except for one plant. But yesterday I saw that the other two plants broke the ground and shot up! Hooray!

Here's our Magnum! I sent this to Matty in the a.m. We're so Proud!

Thursday garden update

3 Weeks 'till school is over. Its been a busy semester back. Im in the process of trying to transfer to Stony Brook so I can focus more on Asian Studies and much less on Spanish. My heart is all for Japan. I really need to get back there very soon. It's been a year, and I'm soo homesick!

Matt and I turned over the garden last weekend, and sometime in the next week Im going to plant everything. Heres what we'll have:

Veggies
  • Tomatoes
  • Peppers
  • String beans
  • Peas
  • Bibb Lettuce
  • Mesculin Mix
  • Micro Greens
  • Cucumbers
  • Red Radishes
  • Daikon Radishes
  • Carrots
  • Zucchini
  • Summer Squash

Herbs
  • Basil
  • Cilantro
  • Mint
  • Dill
  • Parsley
  • Lavender
AND.....
HOPS!!
Yupp our very own hops! I order the rhizomes a few days ago online from Freshops.
We ordered the Cascade, Fuggle and Magnum hops. Hopefully we will get a decent crop this first year. Usually the hops need a year to establish their root systems, but next year we defiantly have a nice crop.

I don't mind so much

I actually really enjoy not having a job right now. Its really giving me well needed time to get things done that have been put off for a while.

I started all the seeds for our garden, which has now graduated from a few buckets on the deck to a 7'x10' plot in the back plus about another 12' of garden along the fence. That does not include flowers that I am going to plant, and herbs growing in planters. This is probably going to be too much! There will be more to come on that too.

I've been baking like crazy too. In less than 4 days i baked 3 loaves of bread, and muffins.

Today I updated my 43 things to include travel to 100 different countries. Matt and I have been watching the travel channel obsessively lately. Anthony Bourdain's no reservations is by far my new favorite show. Last night he was in Singapore, for the 7th time. He says that it might just be the best place for food lovers to go. Sign us up! How do I get a job like that?
I have a goal of traveling. Now I need a list.
